A visible signature on a document does not guarantee that it is legally valid

Only through a thorough verification process can the authenticity of the signature, the validity of the certificate, its revocation or expiration status, and the integrity of the document be confirmed. The validation process is what allows its reliability to be demonstrated to third parties and legally upheld over time.

Electronic signature and digital certificate validation on a document with legal proof.

Document integrity

Any modification made afterwards, no matter how small, invalidates the signature. Only cryptographic verification of the file hash ensures that the content has not been altered since the moment of signing.

Digital certificate validation

If the certificate is expired, revoked, or was not issued by a recognized certification authority (TSL), the signature has no legal validity. Verifying the origin and status of the certificate is essential to trust the document.

Validity over time

A signature may be valid today but impossible to prove tomorrow. Verification confirms whether the signature includes a timestamp issued by a recognized provider and whether the certificate was valid at the exact moment of signing, ensuring its evidentiary value even after the certificate expires.

Proof for third parties

Without an electronically signed and timestamped evidence report, proving the validity of a signature before auditors, regulators, or courts can be complex. Certification of the verification process provides objective, traceable, and legally robust proof.

What the universal electronically signed document verifier validates

An electronic signature is only reliable when it is technically verified. Verification is the only way to guarantee that a document is intact, authentic, and legally valid.

  • Document integrity (hash)

Detects any modification after the time of signing through hash verification.

  • Signer certificate validation

Extracts the data from the digital certificate included in the signature and verifies its trust chain.

  • Certificate status

Checks the certificate status at the time of signing: valid, expired, or revoked.

  • Trust entities and lists

Verifies that the digital certificate was issued by a recognized trusted entity included in an official EU Trusted Service List (TSL) or other accepted countries, as well as by international certification authorities and trusted repositories.

  • Timestamp

Determines whether the signature includes a timestamp and validates its temporal consistency. Learn more about timestamps.

  • Signature level (according to ETSI standards)

Identifies the signature level (B/T/LT/LTA) and the mechanisms used for long-term validation, as well as whether the signature is qualified, advanced, or simple (eIDAS).

  • Long-term validation (LTV)

Ensures that the signature can be verified over time, even after the certificate expires.

  • Supported formats (PAdES, XAdES, CAdES, eIDAS)

In addition to validating signatures, it recognizes signed document formats such as digital invoices, checking their compliance with standards such as Facturae or UBL.

Documented verification with legal guarantee

Validating a signature is important. Being able to prove it to third parties is decisive.

Everything you need to know about electronic signature verification

No. Simply viewing an electronic signature in a document does not guarantee its legal validity. It does not allow you to verify whether the document has been modified, whether the signer’s certificate was valid at the time of signing, or whether it had been revoked or expired.

Only a complete technical and legal verification, in accordance with the eIDAS Regulation and ETSI standards, can confirm the authenticity of the signature and the legal validity of the document.

The Lleida.net Verifier checks, among other aspects: that the document has not been altered after signing, that the signer’s digital certificate was valid, active and not revoked, that the trust chain is correct and comes from a recognized authority, that the signature complies with the applicable legal and technical standards (PAdES, XAdES, CAdES, eIDAS), and that sufficient evidence exists for its long-term validity (LTV/LTA), where applicable.

Yes. The service allows you to verify any electronically signed document, including contracts, electronic invoices, academic certificates, administrative documents or healthcare documentation, as long as they contain a valid digital signature.

The service is compatible with the main electronic signature standards: PAdES (PDF), XAdES (XML), CAdES (binary), as well as electronic invoicing formats such as Facturae and UBL.

A signature with long-term validation (LTV) includes additional evidence that allows its validity to be verified even after: the signer’s digital certificate has expired or the original validation services are no longer available.
This evidence includes timestamps, revocation data (OCSP/CRL), and certificate chains, in accordance with ETSI long-term signature profiles.
The Universal Signed Documents Verifier checks whether the signature meets these requirements.

Yes. An electronic signature may remain valid even years after it was created if it includes long-term validation mechanisms (LTV/LTA).
The service verifies whether the signature includes timestamping and LTV mechanisms that allow its legal validity to be demonstrated even after the certificate has expired.

A basic viewer or verifier usually only displays the visual status of the signature.
The Universal Signed Documents Verifier, on the other hand: performs a full legal verification, generates a signed and timestamped evidence report, allows long-term signature validation (LTV/LTA), and provides electronic evidence that can be used before third parties.

Yes. The result of the verification is documented through an evidence report that: is electronically signed by Lleida.net, includes a qualified timestamp, and constitutes verifiable electronic evidence.
This evidence allows the document’s validity to be demonstrated to third parties such as auditors, regulators, clients or courts.
